Basset Hound

Short of leg, long of face and ears with impossibly doleful eyes and originating of France, the Basset Hound was bred as a hunting, scent hound meaning it tracks its quarry by smell. The long ears of the Basset Hound actually serve as another tool for the hunt by helping to trap a quarry's scent. Basset roughly translates from French meaning "rather low", astutely describing its proximity to the ground. The Basset Hound was not built for speed and is not a particularly active breed of dog.
