Papillon

With a name meaning butterfly in French, one might expect the Papillon, originating of France, to be fragile. Small, but spirited with long-fringed ears the Papillon, also known as the Continental Toy Spaniel, is one of the oldest and smallest breeds of Spaniels. While Spaniels are typically a working breed, the Papillon is and has always been primarily a loyal, devoted companion dog, and was once a preferred pet of royalty. Like many small breed dogs, they can be overly protective of their owner.
