Chihuahua

Originating of, and named for the state in Northern Mexico, the Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog and has essentially always been a companion animal dating back to the Mayans. Small and fiercely loyal, the Chihuahua has a tendency towards extreme devotion to its owner, often taking on his or her temperament, and may veer towards becoming overly-protective and somewhat aggressive. The Chihuahua is not particularly child-friendly and is best suited to households with older children.
