Portuguese Water Dog

Originating of Portugal, the Portuguese Water Dog was originally bred as a working dog to fishermen. In addition to helping to herd fish into nets, the Portuguese Water Dog with its penchant for water and swimming also served as a retriever for lost or broken gear and nets. This affable and active breed has increased in popularity in recent years with two dogs sharing domicile in the White House as pets to the Obama family. The breed neared extinction in the early part of the 20th Century.
