Great Dane

Contrary to what its name may suggest, the enormous Great Dane actually originates of Germany and not of Denmark and is also known as the German Mastiff. As with many dogs of German origin, the Great Dane was renamed due to anti-German sentiment. Great Danes originated as stalwart hunting dogs, capable of successfully stalking and hunting boar, bears and stags. Relative to other dog breeds, and due in part to their size, Great Danes tend towards a shorter lifespan, typically of 6 to 8 years.
